Ancient Meets Modern: Painting the Greek Landscape with Katherine Downey Miller
Ancient Meets Modern: Painting the Greek Landscape with Katherine Downey Miller
September 1 – 12 2024
Explore painting the Greek landscape in a setting that echoes back to its ancient origins and simultaneously inspires new directions – the beautiful
island of Skopelos!
If you ever wanted the opportunity to immerse yourself in your art while exploring another culture, this trip is not to be missed!
Our workshop will focus on the foundation building blocks of landscape painting. You’ll learn how to break down the landscape you’re seeing, loosen up, find simple dynamic compositions and create compelling landscape paintngs! You’ll then have the choice to move on toward abstraction by deconstructing our traditional landscape, layering the lines of the land and creating a new artistic language.
We’ll work together each morning in an array of inspirational plein air painting locales: along the dazzling shores of the Aegean, among olive groves and lush gardens scented with jasmine and lemon trees, in the lanes of a traditional Greek village with age-old Byzantine churches, and at the spectacular chapel of Agios Yiannis on the Rock, the setting for Sophie’s wedding in the film Mamma Mia!
On alternate mornings, we’ll work in our open air studio, bringing our ideas, sketches and paintings to work on while learning new approaches.
Katherine will help you develop your own painting style while teaching you the basic components of the landscape process. It’s a journey with many varied stops along the way – and it’s up to you how far you wish to go!
Afternoons are free to continue working independently or relax, swim, explore and enjoy the island. We’ll meet again in the early evening for a series of cultural presentations that will introduce you to Greek history, mythology and customs, as well as an evening of Greek music and dancing!
Our workshop begins with an inspiring visit to Athens, highlighted by tours of the Acropolis, the spectacular Acropolis Museum, the Theater of Dionysus and the Ancient Agora. We’ll explore the quaint streets of this legendary city and dine in lively tavernas.
This is your opportunity to recharge your creative juices while you make inspired art and savour the delights of Greek island life!
All levels welcome.
Acrylic paint is the most suitable for this course.
